Responsibilities

Performs venipuncture, specimen procesing functions, and various other specialized specimen collections.

 

Inpatient and outpatient in the medical center:

  • Collects blood specimens on inpatients and outpatients through venipuncture, capillary fingerstick, or heelstick from newborns according to policy.
  • Obtains blood according to lab policy and procedure with minimal bruising to patient.
  • Interprets physician orders and performs computer order entry accurately.
  • Properly instructs outpatients in specimen collections.
  • Accurately enters relevant collection information under correct patient identification.
  • Accurately enters physician information.
  • Assists Manager in compiling data for Quality Assurance monitoring and Performance Improvement indicators.
  • Assists SPA (Specimen Processing Area) with collection and processing of samples.

Outreach (Patient Service Centers):

  • Collects blood specimens on young children to senior citizens through venipuncture, capillary fingerstick, or heelstick.
  • Obtains blood according to lab policy and procedure with minimal bruising to patient.
  • Registers patients and orders lab tests in computer.
  • Label tubes appropriately with initials, date and time.
  • Processes patient samples according to procedure which involves centrifuging and aliquoting specimens.
  • Interprets physician orders and performs computer order entry accurately.
  • Properly instructs patients in specimen collections.
  • Maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Assures completeness of all records in patient service center including quality control charts.

 

Qualifications

Outpatient/inpatient phlebotomist requirements:

  • High School graduate or equivalency
  • Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Certification preferred

Traveling phlebotomists requirements:

  • 3 years phlebotomy experience
  • ASCP-certified phlebotomy technician a plus
  • Must be able to work independently in a patient service center (PSC) environment
  • Proficient computer skills
  • Self-motivated with excellent customer service skills

Physical Demands

Standing; Walking; Reaching at waist; Lifting/pushing or pulling up to and greater than 40 pounds; Bending; Climbing; Reaching below waist; Typing; Filing; Sitting; Kneeling; Stooping; Reaching above shoulder.

 

Traveling phlebotomists drive in inclement weather to client sites.
